'Like Me' by Alvin Yu

It was 5:30 in the afternoon, when I was playing this game called “Mitosis the Game”, this game is basically a blob kind of game and suddenly this song came up and i didn’t like it for a sec, when suddenly it got better and i started to get pumped up in the game i was playing and i got more pumped up and then i got to 1st place on the game i was playing. Jake Miller is from Weston, Florida, United States and his real name was Jacob Harris Miller. He got famous when he started to began posting his original songs on Youtube a few years ago.He released his first Debut album on November 5, 2013 which was called “Us Against Them”. He’s a hip hop and Pop song artist. On May 7,2014 Miller was labeled as the #1 Artist to watch by Foxweekly. Jake Miller uses Rhyme and Verbal Irony throughout the song to convey the important message that “You should be yourself”

By using Rhyme, Miller help his listeners understand that you must be yourself. In his opening verse, Miller immediately dives into how the boy is being himself. He gave an example on the boy is being confident,”While everyone around him was obsessed with fittin’in, He never let the words of others get in his way.”(“LIke” 15-16). By Rhyming “way” and “today”, Jake Miller is contrasting the idea of ignoring what people say something about the boy with being a real Man/Mature kid already. This reveals the theme that you should be Yourself because there’s a lot of people who are trying to change you.

Miller also uses Verbal Irony to help convey his message that you should be yourself. In the middle verse of the song is describing how others aren’t confident and not being themselves. Miller raps,”Now his friends were dressin’ different, barely recognized ‘em/Everyday was Halloween, costume had disguised ‘em.(“Like” 27-25). While Jake Miller is saying, “Everyday was Halloween costume had disguised ‘em “, what he actually means is that everyone and everyday there, the kids are hiding their real self. This reveals the theme that you should be yourself because you can’t always hide for who you really are.

A particular strength of the song is the Lyrics. For Instance, “Everyday was Halloween costume had disguised ‘em”, This strengthens the song by making it easier to find the theme because it’s really obvious when you listen to the song, It likes give you away the theme sat the 1st verse of the song.

“Like Me”, is a really good Hip hop song that conveys the important message to listeners:You should be yourself. This reminds me of when i went to 4th grade in a new School, I was so quiet at the first 2 weeks of School after that, I thought about being myself since I’m already starting to get comfortable with my classmates and what happened was I started to talk more and started to hangout with them and the other kids in School too, It was fun being myself. I recommend that we should help other kids to be themselves.
