"I Knew You Were Trouble" by Rosisela Gonzalez

It was a long 5 hour flight from San Francisco to Guatemala after about 30 minutes the little tv in front of me turned on. Some random music started playing, after about 20 minutes this song called “I Knew You Were Trouble” catched my attention, it wasn’t really the lyrics because I didn’t really understand them, it was the music video that catched my attention. The music video catched my attention because it showed flashbacks of their relationship which gave me a really negative vibe towards the guy. The only part of the lyrics that really catched my attention was the spoken part that said And the crazy thing is I don't know if I'm ever gonna feel that way again. But I don't know if I should.” In my opinion this is the most important part of the son because it lets you know how she feels after all of all of this has happened. Taylor Swift was born in December 13 1989 in Reading, Pennsylvania. At a very young age she already knew what she wanted to do. At age 5 she started crafting songs and by age 11 she was already singing the “star spangled banner” at Philadelphia 76ers. She was spotted by Scott Borchetta during a performance in Bluebird Cafe and after that she was signed to his new label. She started writing country music with her first album “Tay”. After a few years she changed her genre to pop. She was influenced by her grandmother who was a professional opera singer. She also grew up listening to Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton and LeAnn Rimes. She is also inspired by her good friend Ed Sheeran. The theme of the song is if you know someone is bad for you stay away from them because you're going to get hurt. The two devices I’m using to prove this are Verbal Irony and Loaded language.

By using verbal Irony, Taylor helps her listeners understand that if you know somebody is bad for you, you should stay away from them because you are going to get hurt. In her fourth verse, Taylor sings about her boyfriend bringin her down and he tries to pretend it isn’t his fault. “No apologies. He’ll never see you cry,/ pretends he doesn't know that he’s the reason why./ you’re drowning, you’re drowning, you’re drowning” (“Trouble” 35-37). Although Taylor doesn’t mean she’s actually drowning she refers to the feeling you have when you’re drowning, it feels like you're so useless and you can't do anything to save yourself. This reveals the theme that f you know somebody is bad for you, you should stay away from them because you are going to get hurt, because if this guy hurts her emotionally the it's not a healthy relationship and she should stay away from him to be happy.

Taylor uses Loaded language to demonstrate that if you know someone is bad for you, you should stay away from them because you’re going to get hurt. In the fourth verse of the song Taylor is discussing how she did everything for him but he was not loyal to her. “Now I knew you moved on from whispers on the streets/ A new notch in your belt is all I’ll ever be” (“Trouble” 37-38). Taylor uses the phrase “A new notch in your belt is all i’ll ever be” which means that she’s just one of the many girls he's been playing around with, to convey a negative attitude towards the guy not being loyal to her. This supports the theme that if you know somebody is bad for you, you should stay away from them because you are going to get hurt by showing that she is not his one and only then she’s not special to him and she should stop wasting her time and find someone else.

What makes “I Knew You Were Trouble” a powerful song is all of the emotion that is put into the song. Unlike other artists that just talk about girls and money, a message is always learned from a Taylor Swift song. In my perspective the last line from the song is very powerful because Taylor puts so much feelings into it “I don't know if you know who you are until you lose who you are” (“Trouble” 70). This part made it strong because it's true and it can be applied to the real world. Something that made it weak is one part of the chorus. Honestly the whole song is pretty emotional and it would make it more effective if the chorus had the same vibe as the entire song. In the part of the song that says “Now i'm lying on the cold hard ground oh! (“Trouble” 17)In my opinion she does too much in the oh! Part and if she notches it down a bit it would make it better.

If you know somebody is bad for you, you should stay away from them because you are going to get hurt. A text-to-world connection is that a lot of people get in relationships that end up in a messy breakup and they end up heart broken. Some people “love” that person so much that they can’t see that the other person is just hurting them and they could stop it but sometimes they’re too blind. If you like songs about heartbreaks or you know someone who likes them, make sure they listen to Taylor Swift so they know they’re not alone.
