I Lied b\y Nicki Minaj-Yaria

“Ok I get it let me think i guess it’s my turn” I was 7 years old when I first heard of Nicki Minaj. I wasn’t really introduced to her by anyone I was just in the car and heard the song “bedrock” on the radio. The first time I heard that song I just knew she was gonna be my new favorite artist, all I remember is my mom driving an I tried to sing along to it and failed but as soon as I got to school I went straight to the computer lab and searched her up and began to listen to other songs by her.

Nicki Minaj very first came out into the music industry in 2007, when she released her mixtapes “Sucka Free”, “Beam Me Up Scotty”, and “PlayTime Is Over.” Nicki grew up listening to Lil Kim, Mary J Blige, Janet Jackson, Marilyn Monroe, Madonna, Smokey Robinson, Jadakiss, etc. When Nicki first signed to the label Young Money [Cash Money] Records her number one goal was to become the next big female rapper.
Not long after being signed to the label Nicki and her Young Money [Cash Money] crew dropped the hit song “bedrock” in 2010 which put Nicki on top considering she was the only female featured on the song.
When this song was nominated for International Video of the year at the B.E.T Awards pretty much everyone wanted to work with Nicki and ever since then Nicki has been dropping music back to back and soon dropped her Pink Friday Album on November 19 of 2010 which had her triple platinum hit “Super Bass”on it. In 2012 Nicki was non-stop fire and dropped her Pink Friday Roman Reloaded album on April 2nd. In 2013 early 2014 Nicki was dropping songs and giving her fans a little taste of what would be on her 3rd studio album The Pink Print, she put out the songs “Pills ‘N Potions,Anaconda, Only, etc. Nicki dropped her Pink Print album on December 12,2014 witched had her single “I Lied” on it.” Nicki uses situational irony and rhyme throughout the song “I Lied” to convey the important message that everyone should be careful of relationships until you know it’s real.

While the listener expects this song to be about a breakup Nicki Minaj surprises us by having this song be about her love for someone else. In the first verse of the song, Nicki Minaj is discussing how she doesn’t want her heart broken anymore, she is scared to let him into her life. Nicki Minaj sings “Even Though I Said I Didn’t Love You….I LIED” (“Lied” 5-6). I think she’s using situational irony here because she’s saying one thing but means another.

In addition by using rhyme, Nicki explains  that everyone should be careful of relationships until you know it’s real. In the middle of verse one of the song Nicki is describing that she doesn’t want her heart broken anymore and she wants to know if he is being real about this relationship. Nicki raps “But ain’t mean that I need some fucking proof cause what happens if I fall in love then you cut me loose, you just a heart breaker won’t let you break mines cause I be smashing windows
and cutting the break lines.” (“Lied” 19-22). By rhyme Nicki is connecting proof/loose and mines/lines.

One strength is that Nicki doesn’t usually write this genre of music so for it to be so emotional and heartfelt it was a strength. In the song Nicki says “I can’t fall for you, Can’t give my all to you / Can’t let you think that imma let the game stall for you / gotta protect me you gotta sweat me / you said you thought you was ready and I said let’s see but I ain’t mean that I need some fucking proof cause what happens if I fall in love and then you cut me loose? / You just a heart breaker won’t let you break mine cause I be smashing windows and cutting the break lines, I Lied I Lied.” For Nicki Being so emotional in this song I felt that it was great.

One weakness in this song is the auto tune because  it sounds a little to forced, for example whenever Nicki sings “To keep you from breaking my heart ooh / I Lied” (“Lied”11-12). It’s just a little too much auto tune. Also when she sings “Cause who knew that if i just let myself go with you” I feel that she could have used less autotune so that you could hear her voice more clearly.

In conclusion “I Lied” is an emotional relatable song that conveys the lesson learning message that you should make sure you be careful of relationships until you know it’s real. This message is important because ladies out in the world today are just jumping from relationship to relationship because they just want to be loved.but as they’re in these relationships they get did wrong constantly, I feel that the message of this song need to be told because women need to know that if you want to be loved make sure it’s by a man who is committed and wants the relationship.

  1. I really like your essay. One glow is that it is very descriptive and it is clear you really like this song, so it's written really well. One grow is that you could try to show a little more how the quotes connect back to the original message of the song.
