Gun control BY Tristhan Garcia

A toddler named Autumn Johnson was celebrating her first birthday when suddenly, there were gunshots and the toddler who was too young got his life cut short when he got shot by a gunman and died. Autumn Johnson’s family lived in the city of Compton and the police said it was part of a gang-related shooting. ”It’s not surprising it's the city of Compton, for it’s name,” a 47-year-old man who was at a Bible study a few blocks away tells the times. In this topic, I will talk about if guns should be allowed to citizens, and I think it shouldn't be allowed.

One of the most important reason why gun control / law is useful and important is because legally owned guns are frequently stolen and used by criminals. In an article, published in the institute of Medicine (IOM) reports that “ almost all guns used in criminal acts enter circulation via initial legal transaction.” Between 2005 and 2010, 1.4 million firearms are stolen in the U.S alone. this makes the case that mostly firearms that used illegally are stolen. For instance, Ian Ayres, JD, PhD, and John J. Donahue, JD, PhD professors of Law at Yale law school and Stanford law school states that,” with guns being a product that can easily carried away and quickly sold at a relatively high fraction of the initial cost, the presence of more guns can actually serve as a stimulus to burglary and theft. Even if the gun owner had a permit to carry a concealed weapon and would never use it in furtherance of a crime, is it likely that the same can be said for the burglar who steals the gun?”
This information illustrates why criminals or burglars can easily steal a huge amount of firearms. This illustrates the argument that the government should make it illegal for civilians to own firearms because they can be used in criminal acts by showing us how they can be stolen easily from thieves or burglars.

One of the most major reasons why gun control is important is that more gun laws would reduce gun deaths or any homicide caused by firearms. In a study published in CNN, David Frum and a CNN contributor discusses how many deaths are caused by firearms and how legal purchase of a handgun is connected to the deaths. For instance, David Frum and a study published in the American Journal of Public Health states that, ”American children under age 15 were nine times more likely to die of a gun accident than children in other advanced countries…. About 200 Americans go to emergency rooms every day with gunshots wounds.” ( Link) This information shows how many people get shot by firearms every single day. If we made more valuable gun laws in each state in the country, then there will be less casualties than before and also, criminals would more likely to stop their unlawful deed because of how much more dicey for them.

One particularly compelling reasons why the government should make it illegal for civilians to own firearms because they can be used in the wrong way, is that Guns are rarely used in self-defense. In a piece of essay about gun control, the Violence Policy center explains that civilians rarely used guns for self-defense. For instance, the Violence policy recalls, “ Even if a criminal isn't shot down, the study found that civilians rarely used guns to protect  themselves.  Intendent victims of property of property crimes engaged in self-protective behavior with a firearm. Only 0.1 percent of times they were targeted by a crook.” This information demonstrates that how civilians who have guns are unlikely to targeted by burglars or thief. This shows the argument that the government should make it illegal for civilians to own firearms because guns are unlikely are gonna be used for self-defense.

While it’s clear that the government should make it illegal for civilians to own firearms because they can be used in the wrong way, some people might instead argue about that, gun control law infringe upon the right to self-defense and deny people a sense of safety because many guns are also used for self-defense. For instance, the National Rifle Association (NRA) and PEW research insists,“ that firearms are used for self-defense 2.5 million times a year, the police cannot protect everyone all of the time. 61% of men and 56% of women surveyed said that stricter gun law would make it more difficult for people to protect their families.” However, this is a illogical assumptions because guns are rarely used for self-defense and there’s more casualty because of firearms and that’s why it’s more risky to allow citizens to own their own firearms.

Despite ample evidence for why the government should make it illegal for civilians to own firearms because they can be used in the wrong way, some might say that gun control will not prevent criminals from obtaining guns or breaking the law because they can still obtain guns even if the gun law still exist. For instance, John R. Lott, Jr., PHD, gun right activist, states, “The problem with such gun control laws is that they take away guns from law-abiding citizens, while would-be criminals ignore them.” However, this is misguided assumption, just because criminals can get firearms and break the law, this doesn’t mean that it will be easier for them to take firearms illegally because of the gun law. As you can see, the government should make it illegal for civilians to own firearms because they can be used in the wrong way.

As you can see, the government should make it illegal for civilians to own firearms because they can be used the wrong way. This topic is critical because it is important for everyone to be safe and that’s why everyone should know about this subject. In order to stop people from using guns for criminal acts, we should stop people from getting guns without permission from the government. As long as we stop civilians from owning firearms, we can stop criminals from doing unforgivable acts
